         Invitation Haven Site Review
By Sabra Lutz © Copyright 2003

This site loaded fine on a 800x600 screen, although it was less attractive on a 1024x768 resolution. The colors on this site are a bit too saturated overall. A white background might help to calm things down a bit. Also it has too many buttons. The categories should be left as simple text or less intense graphics. The navigation bar is very crowded, and many of the buttons are not spaced evenly. The home page has a list of 'keywords' at the top which may help with search engines, but is not very attractive.

The testimonials is a good idea on a site like this and is appropriate on the home page, but the location is not ideal. Also the images running down the side of the page would be better of arranged in the body of the page. They should also be a similar size. Two of the four image are linked to broken pages. What is meant by "Don't forget the little things"? All of the items under it have thier own categories and together make up a good portion of the site's offering.

When entering the categories the products are nicely arranged and the images are quite nice. There is wording above each "(Click photo samples & ordering) " perhaps it is meant "(Click photo for samples & ordering)". When on the product page there is a lot of information to sort out. "Order help" and "faq" are helpful, but they take a while to wade through. Granted the product being sold has a lot of custom features, but the organization of the page makes it seem even more complicated. Some of the samples on the same product were so different it took some imagination to see how they were qualified as the same item.

The better samples were the ones that were all the same images with differences in attributes. Under the category birth/adoption there was a card for engagement, one for a guy turning 30, and another for marriage/graduation/bridal shower. This product was counted as one despite the huge variation in theme. It seems that the card is suitable for any of the above, but it is confusing when the customer clicks on kids and gets cards for engagements and weddings. The images should be changed to represent the category they are in.

When clicking on add to basket a page comes up with the options you can choose. It says "attributes in bold are required" but none of the following attributes are bold. Some were underlined so I assumed that those were the required ones. I later discovered they had links to pages that were meant to assist in selecting the item. On the next page there is an offer to have a 'proof' of your card posted online, but there is no mention of how much it will cost until it is added to the basket.

When you click on checkout a message comes up saying that there are secure and nonsecure items on the page and then it routes you back to the home page! The only way I found to actually checkout is to click on the small link under the "minibasket display" module on the category tree. The product shows the product attribute selections that were configured and seemed to calculate the charges correctly. Shipping method and payment methods were both defaultd to <choose...> . Overall I must say that I found the site a bit difficult to wade through and it ran a bit slowly. I can see the potential of the site and recognize the amount of work that went into configuring the attributes to cover a wide variety of customizable attributes.

The shipping costs, refund policy, & privacy policy should be easier to find. In fact I found no reference to a refund policy at all.
