| The site's welcome page uses
coordinated colors & is not over-populated.
An extensive description of terms and policies is good. (You might consider a link to them
from the "About" page.) Good use of modules Best Sellers, mini basket, Order
Status/History.
SPEED/PERFORMANCE:
Each category loads extremely slowly (on cable modem). For
example, the "Shirts" category took about 17 seconds to load, "Kids"
and "Accessories" took 30 seconds! I would suggest limiting the number of
products that display to no more than 10 per page, but that does not seem to be the only
reason for the slow response. (See next comment.)
After selecting a product (Western Work Shirt), clicking
"Add to Basket," it took about 9 seconds for the Product Attributes to display.
As a reviewer of the site, these pauses are an irritant,
but a shopper would probably move along to another site.
The very slow response is a BIG, BIG problem. You should
check with your host, or consider another host. All the additional JavaScript also adds to
the slowness.
SECURITY:
On secure pages, a Security Error displays indicating that
the certificate belongs to "*.securesites.com" while trying to access
"www.theworkingstore.com." Your host needs to rectify this.
NAVIGATION & USABILITY:
Upon entering theworkwearstore.com site, the
"Search" box displays above the categories, and the "Login" below the
categories. Then, after selecting a category, the Search box and "My Account
Login" (now renamed) move to the right of the selected category's items in a boxed
area that also contains additional information. This is rather confusing. I'd suggest
keeping Search & Login above/below the category list.
After logging in, the "Main" page (which is
outside the store) still says "login" while "My Account Login says
"Welcome Back."
The boxed area also contains a link to a pair of dungarees
that displays for no apparent reason. If this is a related item, it would help to label
it. Its link goes to a secure URL (https), but it needs only an http. (This also causes
the security alert noted above.) Note: after some time on the site, I see the dungarees
are the currently featured product.
There are two checkout buttons - one in the boxed area and
one in the secondary menu -- going to different links.
The top menu has a "Products" link, and after
selecting a category there is also a "Product List" link (in the secondary
menu)-- only the "Product List" lists the products. The "Products" at
the top actually lists the categories. (Since this site contains so many products, the
"Product List" is probably not usable or necessary.)
The links at the bottom change, depending upon what screen
you're on. For example, from "About" the links do not show "Our Terms"
but from "Main" it does.
On an 800x600 display, the boxed area on the right is not
seen without scrolling -- unless the browser maximized.
Products
---------
The product names and descriptions are all in UPPER CASE
which are not as easy to read as a combination or upper/lower. And, UPPER CASE is
considered yelling online. (Also, some search portals that use pay-for-performance do not
accept/like upper case in the product descriptions. If you use pay-for-performance, it
would be a good idea to check the submission requirements.)
The list of products within each category is not easy to
read. They appear squeezed for space, either because the boxed area to the right and/or
due to the product names IN CAPS.
Each product page has about 3/4 to 1 full screen at the
bottom that's blank.
Product Attributes
---------
The Hoods, for example, have color attributes, each with
drop-down selections for size. The only option is "One Size Fits All." A more
user-friendly approach would be to use the radio-button selections for color. Then,
"one size fits all" could be in the product description and/or in the color
prompt itself.
Some products have thumbnail images under the product
image: a thumbnail product image, the others indicating colors. Clicking a color shows an
excellent close-up of the texture and color, but, it covers the product image. It takes a
moment to realize clicking the thumbnail product image restores the full image.
SUMMARY
Foremost, performance must be addressed. Then,
usability/navigation tips or modification would help the novice and experienced shopper
find their way around your store.
This store has a lot going for it. With a few adjustments
-- it'll be great!
NOTE: I created a test account:
"elise writer" (first/last names) that can be deleted.
