A screen will open in the right frame that prompts you for
your category information. (The categories will be displayed in the order that you
create them, so if you already have an idea of what order they should be in start with the
category that you want to be first. You can change the category
order later on so don't worry if you are not sure.)The first screen that comes up will ask you for the category name and code.

You can put anything you like for both the "Category
Name" and the "Category Code". The "Category Name" is what
will appear on your side navigation bar, and the "Category Code" is what will be
used for the URL string. (Using a short "Category Code" will make the URL
string for that category shorter, and using spaces in the "Category Code" will
result in a string that has a "+" between the words. Using the shortest
possible "Category Name" will prevent your side navigation bar from becoming too
wide.)
The "Parent Category" box allows you to directly
assign a new category as a sub-category to one that you have already setup. Since
this is our first category it does not apply to this situation, but if you already had a
category called "Shoes" and wanted to create a sub-category of that section
called "Men's" you could put in the "CATEGORY CODE"
(not the "Category Name") for "Shoes" and "Men's" would
automatically become a sub-category of that section. You can use the
"binocular" icon to search for the category you would like to assign it to
(similar to the "browse" button on a PC). You can also directly create
sub-categories under any given category. We will discuss this later in this
tutorial.
The "Active" checkbox allows you to 'hide' the
category until you have finished adding all the products/sub-categories to it. If
you select it then the category will show immediately on the side navigation bar and
customers will have access to it. If you do not select it the category will be
'hidden' from customers until you have completed all the modifications you wish to
make. To make it available to customers later on expand "Categories" using
the blue arrow and then click on the hyperlink for
"YOUR CATEGORY". Check the "Active" box and click
"Update".
