Step by Step
         Editing Products
By Sabra Lutz, Technology Matrix Group - © Copyright 2001
As with your store and categories, editing your products after they are created is an important step.  In the editing screens you will be able to setup product attributes, select related products, create upsale products for that item, inventory tracking, and setup additional shipping charges if you are using either "Price Table Based Shipping" or "Weight Table Based Shipping.  Of course you can also edit all of the basic product information (code, name, description, etc.) and the product images.

Step 1

To access your product editing screen in admin Login, and expand your store, then click directly on the "Products" link.

You will see the screen below appear in the right frame of your admin.

When you open the "Products" screen for the first time you will see a list (10 items per page) of all your products, in the order that you added them.   Under the "Sort" option you can choose to arrange the products in a different order if you wish.  Rearranging them from this screen will affect the "Product List" and "Search" pages, and the order of products in categories that do not yet have products assigned to them, but will not affect the order of products in pre-existing categories.

Also be aware that if you choose to reorganize the products using the "Sort" option you will not be able to undo it by clicking on the "Refresh" button.

If you wish to re-order the products in the store you will need to use the "Up" and "Down" arrows.   Unfortunately, this is a tedious process since you must wait for the screen to reload between each move, but there is nothing you can do about it.

It is very important that you let both frames refresh before clicking on anything.  Clicking before then can cause much damage to your store!

Note: changing the product order on this screen will re-order products on the "Product List" and "Search" screens only.  It does not affect your categories.  To change the order that products appear in your categories you will need to edit the order under the given category.

Another point worth mentioning is that the checkboxes on this screen are used for deleting products.   Merchant will not warn you before deletion so be careful.

The "Display" option is interesting in that it will not only allow you to see the given property for each item on the "Products" screen, but it will give you the ability to edit those properties directly from the "Products" screen as well.  Merchant defaults to the "Code" and "Name" but you can select as many as you like.   Obviously the more options you select, the more crowded your screen will become and the longer it will take to load.

Step 2

Once you have located the product you wish to edit on the "Products" screen. Click on the edit button and you will see a screen that looks very similar to the one that was displayed as you created the product.   However, you will now have new options that you can set for each product.

The first of these new options is the Related Products tab.

This tab allows you to set "related" products for each item which will be displayed at the bottom of the product page.   Setting these up is a simple matter of selecting the checkbox next to the items you wish to assign.  In this case note that the text above the text box says "Assigned" and not "Remove".  You can determine how the related products will be displayed by setting up the "Related Products Layout".
